Fleet Management Systems to Rebound Beginning in 2012, According to ABI Research


LONDON - Market growth in fleet management systems will remain flat in the short term in the wake of the global economic recession, but will stage a return to healthy growth starting about 2012 as the market dynamics and trends shift to scalable end-to-end solutions, driver management applications, and regional strategic ecosystems. FMS revenues are expected to reach $9.5 billion in 2015, according to forecasts just released by ABI Research.

From cost-reduction to workforce productivity

Telematics practice director Dominique Bonte says, “As a recession begins, costs (in this case particularly fuel costs) become increasingly important, and failure to reduce them can be fatal for some smaller businesses. Survivors squeeze every penny out of a fleet management service, focusing on small things such as driver behavior, route navigation efficiency, routing, vehicle diagnostics, and preventive maintenance. Most of these are machine-to-machine applications that have very little to do with human beings.

“As recovery kicks in, emphasis will shift from cost-reduction to workforce productivity. Now, the industry is moving towards empowering humans to drive profits rather than machines to reduce costs.”

This effort is supported by increased awareness and adoption of technological solutions, and falling hardware component and wireless connectivity costs.

Ripe for consolidation

Among the barriers to FMS market growth are the absence of standardization, market fragmentation, and the lack of differentiation between operators. “Most fleet management operations are doing pretty much the same thing,” notes Bonte. “Given that, the industry is ripe for consolidation. What the market needs in the long term is a standard platform portfolio of features from which firms can pick and choose those that best suit their size and operations.”

ABI Research’s “Fleet Management Systems” study provides a definition of target vertical markets, and considers end-user applications, enabling wireless technologies, and market dynamics. It includes profiles of selected ecosystem participants. Market forecasts are also given for regional subscription penetration, system subscriptions, system hardware shipments, and total system revenues by regional segments.

CTIA-The Wireless Association® Announces Updated Best Practices for Location-Based Services

LAS VEGAS, NV – As International CTIA  Wireless exhibits concluded in Las Vegas last week, CTIA-The Wireless Association® announced the release of the industry’s updated voluntary “Best Practices and Guidelines for Location-Based Services” which promote and protect the privacy of wireless customers’ location information. Initially released in June 2008, the Guidelines were revised due to the dynamic and constantly innovative nature of the wireless ecosystem and the latest developments in Location-Based Services (LBS). 

“For more than a decade, CTIA has been a leader in ensuring consumers’ location privacy. As the wireless industry continues to develop innovative new devices, cutting-edge LBS apps and deploy next generation networks, it’s important that our industry’s best practices evolve to reflect the changes in the wireless ecosystem,” said Steve Largent, president and CEO of CTIA-The Wireless Association. 

In particular, the Guidelines have been revised to recognize that multiple entities can play a role in the delivery of a single LBS application. Updates to the Guidelines also address:

  • Application of the Guidelines to the use of various location technologies
  • Clarification of the relationship between account holder and user 
  • Other general improvements to aid clarity

LBS providers that have adopted these Guidelines provide consumers with the confidence and assurance that their private location information is protected.

Tele Atlas Updates with More ADAS-Quality Map Content, Precise Global Road Network Geometry

LAS VEGAS --(Business Wire)-- Tele Atlas, the world leader in high quality digital maps and dynamic content, today unveiled the latest version of its database, MultiNet® 2010.03. With more than 32 million kilometers (20 million miles), Tele Atlas maps cover more roads, more countries and more people than any other available map, with comprehensive location and navigation content of 95 countries and territories in Europe, North and South America, Africa, the Middle East and Asia.

The latest maps feature the addition of gradient data based on anonymous GPS measurements on approximately 95,000 kilometers (59,000 miles) of roads in North America and 225,000 kilometers (140,000 miles) of major roads across Europe, a 400 percent increase in Europe in ADAS compliant coverage from the product’s initial release in January 2010.

Tele Atlas continues to demonstrate advancements in leveraging anonymous GPS measurements in combination with other sources and processes to validate and realign or extend the world’s road network. The newest maps now contain input from drivers in 35 countries across 18 features that changed crossings into roundabouts, added or adjusted street names, adjusted traffic flow and added streets. Changes include new road geometry across Europe in countries such as Croatia, Poland and Turkey, to expand the global road network.

The latest release also features notable updates around the world, including:

  • Content to enable key functionality such as address locating with house number expansion in the Czech Republic, Finland, France, Greece, Norway, Spain, Sweden and Turkey;
  • Expanded coverage, including the recently announced navigable maps of Ukraine which cover the country’s complete major and interconnecting road networks, the creation and expansion of street network and fully-attributable coverage in Russia;
  • New availability of map coverage for Uruguay and for Burkina Faso, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gabon, Mali and Mauritania in Africa;
  • Augmented attribution for approximately 52,000 kilometers (32,000 miles) in Germany and 30,000 kilometers (18,600 miles) in Spain to enable appropriate routing that helps keep drivers off undesirable roads, such as logging roads;
  • Delivery of the first Address Point product in Russia to identify the precise location of destinations for spatial analysis and application display;
  • Rich content to enhance Tele Atlas Urban Maps, including additional metro station points of interest (POIs) and pedestrian walkways in Greece, Italy and Germany, and;
  • More advanced database features such as signposts and speeds in South Africa and the Middle East, including United Arab Emirates and Qatar.

How Tele Atlas Maps are Made

Satellite industry awards recognise Inmarsat innovation

 Inmarsat has won two awards for innovation from leading satellite industry organisations.

The Society of Satellite Professionals International (SSPI) selected Inmarsat and EADS Astrium as the recipients of a 2010 Industry Innovator Award for "the complex, multi-year effort to develop and launch the Inmarsat-4 system of spacecraft".

It was accepted by Inmarsat chief technical officer Gene Jilg at an awards ceremony on 16 March.

The Industry Innovators Awards, introduced in 1993, recognise outstanding new contributions to the field of satellite communications by both private-sector and public-sector organisations.

Industry experts
Recipients are chosen by a committee of industry experts for accomplishments ranging across a broad spectrum of advanced satellite technology and business applications.

Explaining why it had selected Inmarsat and EADS Astrium for the systems development and applications award, the SSPI stated: "The I-4 satellites use onboard processors to adapt to changes in traffic across the globe, and can generate nearly 256 spot beams for users on Earth while dynamically allocating bandwidth based on demand.

"A unique feature of the I-4s is the ability to generate beams of variable size to adjust the performance of the link with user terminals of different size and capability.

Global broadband
"The main technical challenges faced in developing the six-ton I-4s were design and manufacture of the digital processor, plasma propulsion system, payload engineering and system engineering by EADS Astrium in the UK and France; the L-band reflector by Astro Space (Northrup Grumman, USA); and the L-band feed by EMS (now MDA, Canada)."

Following the launch of the third I-4 satellite in August 2008, and a successful satellite repositioning programme that ended in February 2009, Inmarsat became the only satellite operator to offer mobile broadband services on a global basis.

The second innovation award, for the maritime service, FleetBroadband, was presented to Inmarsat's global networks and engineering senior vice-president Richard Denny by the Mobile Satellite Users Association (MSUA).

Rapid adoption
Association president Tim Farrar said: "This year, the Innovation Award recognizes Inmarsat's FleetBroadband, which... is being adopted rapidly in the maritime market across a range of vessels. We are pleased to honour this innovative product."

MSUA is a non-profit organisation that promotes the interests of mobile satellite users worldwide by fostering communications between end-users, suppliers and operators.

Both organisations also recognised the work of Inmarsat-sponsored aid agency Télecoms Sans Frontières for providing emergency satellite communications to relief workers and local populations in disaster zones.

Both awards were presented in National Harbor, Maryland in the US at events held in conjunction with the Satellite 2010 conference and exhibition.

Berg says GPS-enabled GSM/WCDMA handsets shipments up 92% in '09

Gothenburg, Sweden – March 18, 2010: According to a new research report by Berg Insight, global shipments of GPS-enabled GSM/WCDMA handsets increased 92 percent in 2009 to 150 million units. Growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 38.7 percent, shipments are forecasted to reach 770 million units in 2014. Adoption of GPS technology started in the smartphone segment where it is now essentially a standard feature on all new models. Berg Insight anticipates high attach rates of GPS also in new low-cost smartphones about to enter the market. In addition, GPS will become more common in mid-range featurephone models during 2010. Starting next year, users can also expect gradual improvements in location performance in handsets.

 

“Chipset developers and handset vendors are already working on next-generation location technologies that will address the limitations of GPS when using handsets in urban canyons and indoors”, said André Malm, Senior Analyst, Berg Insight. “Multi-mode receivers that also support the Russian GLONASS satellite system will appear in handsets in 2011. By combining the two systems, more visible satellites will increase the chance to receive sufficiently strong signals to get a fix in more locations”. He adds that receivers compatible with GPS, GLONASS and later also Galileo will not be enough to enable reliable positioning indoors. In the next decade, further performance increases will come from developments in hybrid location technologies. These fuse signal measurements from multiple satellite systems, cellular networks and Wi-Fi, together with data from various forms of sensors such as accelerometers, gyroscopes and altimeters.

Nav n' Go debuts iGO Primo at CeBIT; remains optimistic about the PND market

Nav n' Go, which supplies navigation software to PND vendors including Motorola and Magellan, is optimistic about the personal navigation device market and its ability to compete with new market entrants like Google.

The company launched iGO Primo at CeBIT today, which adds over 30 new features and hundreds of enhancements to the iGO My way engine.

"We are pretty optimistic still about the PND space, that it's growing, it's going to become more and more popular in several developing markets which we keep an eye on," Director of Product Marketing Zoltan Szilagyi told GPS Business News' Ludovic Privat. "And we do think that the wireless turbulence, ... obviously with the Nokia announcement that everybody here at CeBIT is asking what do we think about that, is raising the awareness of navigation, and is going to play in the favor of companies like us, where we can really deliver our core technology to lots of different devices."

Untangle the mysteries of M2M - A Preview of M2M Zone's Seminar at CeBIT 2010

When tomorrow's M2M Zone Seminar, M2M: Energy, Transportation, Telehealth, begins at 2 PM, two of Europe's most integral M2M players will kick things off.

Everyone benefits from geoinformation. Farmers can determine which soil needs to be fertilized. Truck drivers can find the right delivery address. The Public Works Administration can locate the district heating pipelines. A tourist can find the local theater. Everyone will find what they are looking for with a decent map. It works even better if the map contains relevant information.

The Galileo satellites are just being launched, everyone uses Google Maps and only the real die-hards still travel without GPS or other travel planners.  What is particularly important about geoinformation systems this year?

Hering: 2010 is going to see some really extensive changes in the application of geoinformation systems. Topographical maps with extra information are nothing new per se. The interesting thing about them now is their improved bandwidth capacity, which allows them to load maps onto computers or mobile devices at a much faster rate. In the past, around 80 percent of all geoinformation system users were public administrators. Now more and more users belong to the private sector.
